All you need to know about DYSLEXIA

Language Disorder or  Learning Disorder; Dyslexia is so much more and yet not a big deal. In layman’s terms, it is defined as a reading disorder where there are issues using language in a competent manner or in a way that society expects her/him to use it.

To have dyslexia doesn’t mean lack of intelligence or lack of effort. It doesn’t mean having visual problem or a developmental delay either. The cause of dyslexia is thought to involve genetic and environmental factors. They may usually not perform well with standard reading instruction in school and have associated problems like attention deficit, hyperactivity, etc.

Recognising Symptoms

This disorder can be diagnosed during childhood. Children usually show difficulties with reading, spelling, and understanding language they hear. They may face difficulty in expressing themselves clearly in speech and/or in writing. An unexpected gap exists between their potential for learning and their school performance as the latter is judged on how well can they read and write their texts.

Language Issues :
The primary issue is that the child cannot form a relationship between the letter and the sound the
letter represents. They may write the letters incorrectly eg. “b” in place of “d” because the mirror images confuse them. They also face problems in reading single words in isolation, out of context. Most of the other symptoms are an extension to these difficulties.

Formation of spellings is usually difficult for them and they may form different spellings for the same word in a single sheet of paper. Their listening comprehension is considered good. To list rhyming words may be problematic for them and face difficulty in retelling stories and understanding abstract concepts.

Intelligence Factor :
As mentioned above, this disorder is not directly linked to intelligence. It is a cognitive disorder that hampers language learning. When it comes to other areas. one can see that usually mathematical skills are strong though they may transpose number sequences and arithmetic signs.

How you can Manage this disorder effectively?

Like any other disorder, early diagnosis is important here as well. The sooner one understands the issue in hand, the easier it becomes to manage the condition. It is important to remember, there is a lot that a child suffers in terms of emotional trauma and psychological pressure. Inability to perform as per the social standards can lower one’s self-esteem. Therefore, in-depth assessment of a child’s reading and writing abilities, vocabulary, logical reasoning, vocabulary, etc. should be done for an effective diagnosis.

Dyslexia Treatment consists of adjusting teaching methods according to the child’s needs. With the help of compensation strategies, therapy and educational support, dyslexic kids can learn to read and write. The basic aimis to increase a child’s phonemic awareness, i.e. to associate letters withsounds. Oncethis objective is resolved, the extended issues are relatively easier to take care of. The child can eventually be helped to relate these to reading and spelling words by understanding how sounds blend into words.

The treatment for this disorder should be considered a collective responsibility of educators and parents. Together they should look for alternative teaching methods like reading out stories and other texts so that learning takes place through listening comprehension. Visual exercises can also be administered to foster concepts with practice.

To sum up the discussion, one can say, that it is important that we do not take a child’s problems to be simply a matter of discipline or lack of interest. Because childhood is the formative period for a human being, it is important to understand the difficulties being faced and offer alternative solutions.
